Not picking on you...this is just a general question/observation.

I've always wondered.....if the posted limit on an interstate 4-lane is 70 mph, is the speed limit the same in both lanes, or does it only apply to the RH lane?

Was was the intent of the LH lane when the highway was conceived? Now, I fully understand not having the ability to "keep up" and should stay in the RH lane. I had a '55 VW Beetle while in Germany. On a good day with a tail wind and 2 people, it could hit 100 km (62 mph) on the autobahn. 4 people took off another 10 klicks. That was about 1/2 enough to keep up. I used to think Germans with Mercedes or Beemers (back when not everyone in the world had a BMW) drove fast. But, they don't hold a candle to kids now or certain people with blacked out windows.

We all talk about obeying the laws. But it seems we really mean to only obey some laws.

I don’t know how it is in Illinois…but if you drive 70mph (which is the speed limit on most interstates now) in the right lane in Ohio, you’re getting run over by semi’s. If you’re not doing at least 85 in the left lane, you’re stacking up traffic and somebody is 6” off your back bumper. If there’s 3 lanes, I like to hang out in the middle lane at a constant 75 if possible. And I’ll get passed on both sides. I typically like to adjust my speed so I’m never right beside a semi for any amount of time and whenever possible hang out with nobody around me. And if somebody wants to play the weave through 3 lanes game, more power to them…I’m backing off some to avoid the potential pile up. That being said, I’m not the jerk running 70mph in the left lane either. If I’m over there, I’m running with the flow until I can get back over to the right. And sometimes that’s breaking the law at 15 over. I also hate being on the interstate and avoid it as much as I can.

It’s kind of like Nascar is today…it seems like when I was younger there were always a few interstate racers but most people had at least some respect for fellow drivers. It doesn’t seem like there’s much respect anymore. Maybe it’s just an Ohio thing. It seems like the worst spots are either on 75 or 71 headed north. I’ve never really understood why everybody is in such a hurry to get to Cleveland/Toledo or Michigan.

Hoosiers are a whole different deal. If you want to see a mid 80’s rusted out beater truck do 90, drive through Indy on 70 or hang out on 465 or 65 around Indy for a while.
