For 'family' use if you are any kind of budget, it will be incredibly hard to beat the value of a small block GM engine. You can overhaul that 350 cheap, drop in a crate engine, or whatever as economically as anything out there, and have a good reliable runner. I hesitate at putting too much engine in a 'family' vehicle, I've went to a funeral or two in my younger days when friends had too much engine in their car.
