New London, Wisconsin | Glad to hear your wife is on the good side of what she went through. Nobody will know the answers better than you, but sounding things out is always smart.
We began considering retirement three years ago, and really were not sure we were ready. We did so incrementally and it was a great decision for us. We are 68-69 so land acquisition was no longer a plan for us. Our kids didn't want the farm anyway so that choice was easy.
First, about 5 or so years ago, I auctioned, and privately sold a bit of seldom used, little needed stuff. I did that more or less to see how I felt about downsizing. It felt great and I should have done a bit more of that. Having less stuff in the shed made my life better.
Hobbies were mentioned and is an important part of staying happy and healthy. My wife loves the extra time with grandkids, and I to do. But besides that, we have enough hobbies to seem busy full time. Travel became easier and we are ready for more of that.
Do what you love. It's more important than money or legacy.
