| I cut my teeth on a 8640 and 24 row kinze planter in 1980. Boss said; 'figure it out'. it wasn't too bad for me, as I didn't have any other pre conceived planting experience to hamper my learning curve.
Fast forward 40 yrs... and after farming my own stuff with 8 row hitched to 2wd tractors my planter tractor broke down, so I put my ol' MF 4880 articulated on it to finish up the last field. Looked silly as all get out! But within 100 yards of starting, all the nuances that I learned back as a kid came flooding back. Being able to see 2x's further down the marker row, and using a little different wrist action on the steering wheel got me straighter rows than I ever got with the 2wd. Holding side hills better didn't hurt. If I had to, I could turn around cleanly on only 8 rows.. no gouging or rutting the headlands. Certainly not the most economical way to pull a 8 row.. but it sure brought back sweet memories. |
