Southeast Florida | There are two straightforward ways to prime a centrifugal pump:
1. Using a Gasoline Vehicle (Brake Booster Line Method)
You can tee into the engine’s brake booster vacuum line. Connect a suction hose from the tee to a clear jar or container. This jar should have two ports on the lid—one connected to the brake booster line and the other to the suction line from the pump.
As the engine runs, it creates vacuum, drawing water up through the pump suction line. The water collects at the bottom of the jar, preventing it from entering the engine. Once water reaches the pump, shut off the vacuum and start the pump.
2. Using a Reciprocating Piston Air Compressor (Preferred Method)
Install a 3-way valve on the compressor's intake side. One port pulls from open air; the other connects to the suction line from the pump. Start the compressor with the valve set to atmospheric intake, then switch it to the pump suction line.
This will create a strong vacuum to draw water into the pump. If a small amount of water is drawn into the compressor tank, it won’t cause damage. Just open the tank drain valve afterward to remove any water. | |
