South Central MN | Normally rye is pretty forgiving if just using it as a cover but for me this year though it sure took a beating due to the weird winter. Never seen so much winter killed, and most had put down roots and had 2 leaves at least if not more. It was sort of wet in November so had good growing.
Only thing I can think of is it went from warm to negative temps within a couple day span, and didn't have any snow cover. Then it cycled from warm to cold a few times over the winter, again with minimal snow and ground that dried out completely in the top few inches. The rye may have been tricked by it being so warm, normally the plants have a darker tint to them when newly emerged or during cool temps, and this year I noticed they were a lot brighter green when the cold came. Not going to give up using it but boy does it sure look rough out in the field right now. | |
