Can you explain ‘dumping’ to me?  I have never heard an economic definition.

Example: the Okanagan Valley was full of fruit orchards of all kinds 40 years ago. Now all that is nearly gone. The reason is because US fruit was dumped on the market here at low prices, until the local producers had to quit. Then the price went back up. That's where we are now.

So when hog prices are below COP do we get to call Canadian hog imports “dumping”?

I guess call it what you want. I have no stick in that fire other than hogs eat corn, which we grow. A couple of decades ago there was a lot of expansion of hog production in Manitoba. Banker was really encouraging it. Great return on investment etc. I told him if the government and the bank was encouraging it, it likely was a bad idea. Did not take long until hog prices were in the dumpster, and stayed there for a long time. The hog cycle died with the huge investor barns that could not quit when the price was poor. Guys lost a lot of money and some their farms. At the same time hogs were still expanding stateside. Could not figure that one out.

As a corn grower we felt US producers were dumping corn on us when the PIK program was happening. Managed to get some countervailing duty on corn coming north for awhile to slow it down, but it did not last long. US government programs/subsidies that encourage production of especially corn and soybeans have long been viewed negatively north of the border. It is always the "other guy" that has an "unfair" advantage. I guess on a larger scale your President buys into that philosophy in a big way. My view is a little different. I think anyone born in the Western Europe or North America has an unfair advantage. We really forget how good we have it.
