Subject: RE: Feeding Feeders

SW OH
I move mine to the "fat pen" at 6-700 pounds. I make a feed mixture of 70% whole shelled corn, 13% whole raw soybeans, 15% good quality alfalfa orchard grass hay, and 2% TM salt. All of this is ground and mixed through a grinder mixer. They've already been getting some grain before this, so they get 5 pounds per day to start with free choice hay. Over the next 4-6 weeks I increase the amount of grain gradually until they don't eat anymore hay. From there on they have my feed mix free choice, all the time, and no more hay. I sweep out the feed bunk one or twice a week and give that to younger calves. The clean out is fine dust that the fats would prefer not to eat.
