Faunsdale, AL | I’ve never known that prednisone could create a psychological dependency/addiction, but it’s well known to suppress your own normal secretion of adrenocortical hormones like cortisol. Doctors are very familiar with this so they recommend tapering off of the drug gradually to give time for your own hormone production to pick back up.
Adrenocortical hormones are required for life. Cortisol is just one of several hormones from the adrenal gland, but you need it or the drug substitute on board all the time. It’s prescribed because it’s a short acting but very potent anti-inflammatory drug. Short acting means you have to take it every day to maintain its effect but it also means it’s anti-inflammatory effect or undesirable side effects go away quickly or decreases if the dose is decreased.
