| I think that their varieties have a place in some marginal/risky environments. There are fields where controlling seed costs is important. I'll give an example.
I farm on lighter land in the Southeast. We normally drop 24k per acre. Hybrid85 is like 90 a bag and some of the seed I bought this year is $285 a bag. That means that every 80k bag plants 3.333 acres. The seed cost for the hybrid85 is $27/ Acre and the brand name stuff is $85/ Acre. That's a difference of $58 / acre. CBOT is $4.54. That means that the break even yield is 12.77bu lower for the hybrid85. Also, that's $200 less to borrow per bag. I know the hybrid85 is older genetics and has lower yield potential. I am not sure that difference is as pronounce in marginal environments. The economics would be way tougher to pencil out in environments with high yield potential.
That being said I've never planted hybrid85. We haven't done conventional corn is years. There's acres that the case can be made for an inexpensive bag of corn. I'm thankful to have the option of hybrid85. I will probably give them a try on a few of our more risky acres. Hopefully, they can make some new commercials. haha | |
