The only way you save 25% on fertilizer is if your yield decreases by a like amount. A bushel of beans still requires the same amount of P and K regardless of row spacing. 
I see this as similar to strip tillage. Guys claim they save money on P and K but the fact is they still consume the same amount per bushel regardless of where it is applied.
