East of Broken Bow | Was putting on liquid starter 10-12 gallons per acre in a 2X2 slot.
The land I farm is either owned, or long term rented from a relative, and maybe 5-6 years ago, we went from liquid in the planter to dry lightly worked in by a shallow tillage pass. The cost savings of the dry over liquid over the years has been more than the cost of the extra trip over the field. In fact, we actually have been able to up the rates a little with about the same per acre cost.
We really like running the planter naked, and our yields have done nothing but go up. We started grid sampling and they variable rate the nutrients on the field in ways we could not do with our planter which I think may have been the biggest help.
If it were on a field rented year to year that has lower fertility rates, the 2X2 allows you to feed this year's crop in the root zone at a lower rate than broadcasting which saves a bit of cost, but at least 'here' if you have long term control over the field, variable rate try seems to have the best payback. | |
