Subject: RE: Why I raise wheat

North Central KS
On our farm we are on a 3 year 4 crop rotation. Corn/milo, soybeans, wheat and then double crop soybeans or a big summer cover crop to run cattle on. Wheat stabilizes the corn and milo yields. Beans and corn back and forth would use up all our ground cover, I actually think it burns organic matter too. But that’s just a here thing because our yields are low in comparison to most. Wheat is the building block for moisture. A good wheat crop is almost like insurance for the next year or two to have good moisture and cover. You can tell a difference after a poor wheat crop. I really like the diversity, and I’m hoping to switch to more cover crops after wheat so we can run more cows. It’s flexible and can take advantage of high grain prices or high cattle prices. Wheat won’t leave here.
