Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | I have stayed with summer fallow-wheat in my rotation to even up the workload and make use of the combine during the summer. Plus some cash flow.
We ARE rethinking this. We’re not always guaranteed that we can get wheat established in the fall. When we do we can have good yields. And if we grow plenty of straw we follow up the next 2 years either corn which does much better than just growing continuous corn.
If I had all fall crops then we would need a second planter and combine and the labor to go with it. Or hire more done.
Thinking about more spring wheat which is not insurable here. And can be iffy. Oats. Not a great oat growing area. Possibly rye and kill off before pollination. Basically a fallow year to grow residue. That would increase our corn acres with any of these rotations.
Could go wheat after oats or spring wheat if they fail to grow enough residue.
What we see most of the time is our yields increase enough after wheat to offset the loss of a year of fallow
