Southwestern Ohio | flatlick farmer - 12/28/2024 12:52 We helped an agronomist with 15" row wheat compared to narrow row wheat research for his thesis maybe 15 years ago. A 15" entry at 1.25 million seeding rate topped the research each year. We hadn't messed with it since then and generally notill 1.9 million seeds behind corn stalks with a JD 1890. Last year we decided to test some 15" row wheat using our 1795 in side by sides shooting for a target rate of 1.4 million, but ended up closer to 1.6 million (too much!!). The 15" strips averaged 3.5 bushel or 4-4.5% less than 7.5" wheat. However, the beans ranged between 1.8-3.9 bushel better behind 15" row wheat (3-7%~). We planted one field totally in 15" row wheat. Wheat yields were similar to strips. Bean yield on that field was nearly 5 bushel more than the next closes field planted behind 7.5" wheat. So, we planted a couple of fields in 15" row and put strips in several other fields for another much larger comparison, but actually got it planted closer to 1.25-1.3 million. It looks great now, but time will tell.
That's interesting on the beans!
