Central NJ
Let me try to clarify... yes - there would be a 5 foot column of soil contained in the tube and this tube would be open on both ends.
The very bottom part of the tube would have ground contact into native soil and the very top would be topped with soil and the veg plant (or seedling) would be planted there. The seedling would be exposed to air, light, and the elements. Watering and feeding would occur from the top end.

So the set up I'm trying to describe is the same as planting in the ground but only difference is the column of soil. The plant would have 5 foot of the soil in the perforated tube to grown within vertically before reaching down to the native soil.
The perforated tube diameter is 4" so when the plant grows it would be constricted to that diameter to spread out laterally. Would this be a limiting factor for root growth ?

This would be an alternative attempt to keep the plant away from other smaller animals like rabbits, deers, etc...
I'm doing the majority of the garden in an enclosed garden bed. I'm just want to try something a bit different as well.
