Subject: Growing a veg plant in a narrow but long tube packed it soil

Central NJ
Happy Holidays to All.

I wanted to get some thoughts on growing a vegetable table in soil contain in a a narrow but long tube.

This coming season I wanted to try planting a cucumber plant or bean plant in 4 inch x 5 foot vertical drain tube with soil. The bottom end of the tube would have ground contact to native soil. Would plants grow and produce in a set up like this? If it is possible which vegetable plants would work best?

Thanks!
