If somebody else is paying the fuel and repair bills then put me in a truck with a cat in it anyday. Them things will do work! If i gotta buy the fuel and pay for overhauls then i want a detriot.

We developed an appreciation for the Series 60 12.7 Detroit when we were chopping silage. The trucks with that engine hauled as much as the big cats and took about half the fuel to top off at the end of the day.

But the "cool factor" is lost if the truck has a Detroit

Detroit 12.7 after 1997 has the block bored for piston coolers
so the bolt on pistons can be swapped with normal rods and coolers added

handle more HP and lugging with coolers

I used to think so, as well but after owning one(DDEC2) in a W9B, I’ve grown to appreciate it. The 12.7 was kinda snubbed back in the 90’s by “truckers” but DD’s technology had admittedly drifted over to Cat and Cummins by the early 2000’s. They’re a good engine but not my first pick.
