NE ND | Find a make and model you like. Stay away from 2012-2015ish models unless they have been deleted, they seem to have the most emissions issues. Stay pre-2007 if you want just an EGR (no dpf/def). Manuals are the most commo and reliable, but finding drivers gets harder and harder every year, especially if your help is of retired age.
There are different kinds of “automatics”. A true automatic will be an Allison branded. A 2 pedal automated will still drive like a car (computer does the shifting), but it can have some electrical quirks here and there, especially earlier than about 2014. A 3 pedal “automatic” is just an auto shift. Still need the clutch for starting and stopping. Mack and Volvo have their own 2 pedal automated as well.
Being SE ND I’m guessing you’re somewhat close to Fargo and could go to RDO or Nelson for parts so that may play a factor in your decision on what brand truck. Day cabs are easier to get in and out of places with their shorter wheelbase, but sleeper trucks usually are a fair bit cheaper to buy.
Every brand has had a lemon in every model at one point, just do your due-diligence on the history of the truck before buying.
