| 4-5 is a decent class to buy in terms of keeping alive. I’ll take a 4 bull off his mom any day over a 6 bull that’s coming off mom and has a brother or sister nursing also. I buy the latter due to VOG on the class.
I’m a baby sitter when it comes to starting cattle and make there new home better than there last. Rolling avg over last 3 years right under 2%. The nice calves I don’t lose many and most I do are freak accidents. Buying the mismanaged you’re gonna lose some that just can’t be fixed.
I’m mostly buying bulls or heifers that more than likely are bred from there father/brother etc, no vaccination protocols, lucky if they’ve had a 7 way. All barns within 2 hours of home. I figure 4% when buying 10+ hours from home. Have a load outta Arizona that’s at 6% today been here since July.
I figure 2% or less rolling avg is acceptable. | |
