Ideally I would have my pasture fenced and could kick them out on a grass paddock. But I don't. I can pull the handful of biggest heifers and put on dedicated pasture with a similar group. That leaves these other little boogers, streets and heifers. I really just wanted to straighten them out a little. Take them from $500 calves to $700 calves maybe. And defer income from 24 to 25.
I'm feeding a grass hay roll in the pen which is helping create bedding and always have feed available. I fork in better quality grass hay in morning and evening but it largely becomes bedding.
I'm feeding 80% ground corn and 20% of a 54% roasted peanut flour. I feel like that's at about 5# per head per day. I was trying to feed 12% pellets in a separate feeder in case the corn was too much for small calves. But they seem to prefer the corn mix.
Everything has been healthy, but some coughing going on the last few days. I was thinking I'd expand and put the smallest in a separate, or could put steers in a separate.
I have 22 pairs that are kind of stalled out. It's a tough nutrition limited environment I run cows in. And I think it would pay me well to get calves up to 400. I need more room than what I have here though. And need a better manner to feed, water and bed. So I've learned that.
But like I said I don't really know what I'm doing. Only have limited access to affordable feeds.
If anyone has pointers let me know.
