You have no machinery cost, no land cost (not even taxes for owned free and clear land), no personal living cost
Never understood why people add personal expenses in, if you or a spouse had a job to cover living expenses, the farm won't have to cover them. That's good time management.
My wife and I both have jobs, those jobs pay taxes, land expenses, and living expenses. Allows a farm to run much leaner.
I don’t have time for a job, so unless we are going to be homeless and starving, the farm better cover those expenses.
Sounds like your farming too much. People here love to point out how others lose money. Ask yourself, if you quit farming and got a job, would you have more or less money in your pocket? Would you have more or less time to spend with family? If you devoted 4 hours a day, 20 hours a week to a part time job that pays $20/hour you'd be making 20K MORE a year. That will easily cover groceries and more.
You also didn't mention a spouse, I assume they stay at home without a job too, why?
Edit for spelling, dang autocorrect!!!
Why would I go get a $20 per hour job when my hired man makes $22/hr?
My wife is without a job because it’s what’s best for our kids, and a bunch of other people benefit from it too.
And that's your choice, but don't get upset when people point out that there are much better ways to make a buck than slaving away on a farm. I choose to use my time wisely, and having a job that fits in between farming works. Heck my neighbor who farms 1,500 acres has a full time city job. Obviously it's possible.
That’s your opinion. You’re in no place to determine what’s “much better ways” for anyone other than yourself.
What do you consider “better ways” when working a different job? Fewer hours? Sure. Less manual labor? Depends on the farm and the other job. Able to take your kids to work/work with them? No. Better pay? Not likely at all, for me anyway.
