Having a general understanding of the basic aspects of tax law isn't a bad idea even if one uses a CPA to do the filing and arithmetic.
Having a copy of IRS pub 225 is probably more helpful than asking the question here though. Here the two answers are "ask your accountant" or "I did X and haven't been audited for it, so..." Unless jakescia joins the conversation.
