I am not sure it is if we want to make the claim that farmers are making US more food affordable than foreign countries. What we grow food for has basically zero impact on what people earn and their productivity in the US. If the denominator in the calculation changes country to country and isn’t based upon anything the farmer does, then how can we claim it’s US famers doing the heavy lifting.

I would like to see a similar basket of goods in each country priced and use that comparison. That would allow for a true comparison of which country has the cheapest food irregardless of the earning potential of consumers.

My example still stands if one were to do this calculation on a Dr and teacher each shopping in the same supermarket. If one runs the calculation and the Dr’s food is less of a % of his income can we as farmers take any credit for that?
