When you get it down to the final clay layer,I would deep rip the clay bank.Here clay is very common and cheap maybe 1$ yard,,,gravel/sand is costly as well as the loam.We have more clay on the coast with ledge to boot.I did one maybe 30 years ago now,,was just a big dozer,needed clay for a dam right next to the field,,,took off knob,,ground sucked for 20,did not have the correct rigging to part soil well.
