Subject: RE: Lock up

Locks/unlocks, what do you mean, exactly? Does the disk LED light stay on constantly? Slow to respond? For diagnosing the issue, ctrl+shift+esc to open task manager, look under the "performance" tab (I'm using W11 now, forget if the performance tab is the same in W10). Is anything close to 100%? You may need to upgrade some of the hardware. Is your HDD/SSD close to being maxed out on space? If HDD, what is the defrag %? Have you checked the SMART status of the drive (download CrystalDiskInfo to check, it's free)? Could be bad sectors. Windows Defender up to date with a current scan run, Malwarebytes Free installed and a scan run? Have you checked startup processes (run msconfig, click startup tab)? Could be excessive amounts of programs running in the background due to starting automatically at startup. I would check all of those things. After all of that, download O&O ShutUp 10++(it's free), and enable all settings except disable app access to microphone if you use one, and perhaps updates if you don't care about staying current, I disable automatic updates myself. Always start ShutUp10++ after starting your machine. At the end of the day, if you have an early W10 system, depending on what you do/what you have installed on it, you may be pushing the limits of the hardware. Could be as simple as needing more RAM, could be a HDD with bad sectors piling up and the drive could fail quickly, could be malware. As a last resort, you could backup any important files, and do a fresh install of W10. There's also registry cleaners and other things we could get into.
