On the self-built station question, cost/quality is always a trade-off as you note, given that we completely own all maintenance and operations we actually err on the quality side. Some examples are top-end receivers, dual sim (we don't rely on local wireless), and battery/solar back-up, as well as things like motion sensors so that we know pro-actively if a station moved due to human or environmental impact. We also do all our assembly/testing in-house in the US on 100% of our base stations. We look forward to the folks who will be installing our stations on their farms to come back and rave about the quality!!
On the coverage side, the graphic below is based upon an inaccurate pull from our API, our website has the actual coverage on the home page, have the graphic pasted below for our europe coverage at a 50 KM baseline.
