East Central, Nebraska | me trying to get into the details of how rtk works and why an rtk network does or does not do something would be reckless. i should not be debating the functionality of such topic. with that said its my understanding that all devices get location from L1 and 'other information' from L2, therefore its my understanding that all that is happening in a terrastar situation that is different from an rtk situation is that your data is moved via satellite and the rtk users data is moved via radio or modem. i would love to see more information on how these networks work as i find it hard to believe they are using ground reference stations any where close in distance as a good rtk network, which is obviously why they cannot legally claim similar performance of a well maintained rtk network.
as for the spring we did not experience similar circumstances in our area, all were knocked out. my best explanation for your situation is like i stated before. you possibly were not as affected in your area as others were and as a result your neighbors on terrastar likely had system settings in place already anticipating less than rtk desired results, convergence was set lower and in the end that enabled the system to keep operating. if you were affected as an rtk network user and the terrastar guy was not i would be real interested in seeing how the terrastar system lines up with its previous rows today in comparison to where it was at the day the problems were occurring. gps worked that day, it was just really really bad and your system knew you were set to less than an inch or two of error and wouldn't let you proceed. an example of this would be, when this occured i was sitting there and had lots of time on my hands so i was messing with my phone. the gps in the maps worked on my phone but appeared to be miles off from where i was. did it work, yes i guess. was it acceptable, no, no it wasn't.
one of my favorite things about the ag leader informative menus is where it shows the error. i really don't like to see that over about 2-3 in my situation.but as stated before others are perfectly fine with showing 10" there and thats okay if they are happy.
