East Central, Nebraska | solar storms are not something any rtk network provider can manage.
the problems experienced were specific areas and not widespread across the US. i felt as if i experienced them whenever there was any talk of them being an issue and also had neighbors on different rtk networks experience the same thing. i also have neighbors that claimed they were having no problems and for some reason were driving around with 2 row planters a month later.
at the end of the day it matters how your system is set. sounds dumb as hell but i was glad my systems were not working instead of letting me run and have huge and narrow guess rows. i got lots of calls from neighbors some to ask me to explain what was going on and others to brag that they could keep going. the ones that were not moving that wanted to i just told them they could change their correction/convergence threshold to allow them to run also and do a half assed job like their neighbors.
the best way i can explain what is happening is that the base and the rover (tractor) need to see (have in common) x number of satellites. when solar flares disrupt this they may only have 3 in common instead of maybe they usual say 8 or 10. the rover (tractor) itself may be seeing 17 typically and only 6 in a solar flare situation. at that point the whole system becomes unusable because it does not have enough to know its doing a great job therefore it doesn't allow you to use it. the only reason you may not have seen a problem on terrastar is it is using a whole separate satellite to correct and that sat may or may not be affected.
at the end of the day terrastar does not and cannot guarantee the repeatability that a good rtk network can, that is okay for some people, others demand the accuracy and repeatability of rtk. i cant say that your current provider will work better next year but i can tell you that terrastar is susceptible to the same issues under similar circumstances. my area saw just as many problems with terrastar, sf3 and rtx as it did with the local deere rtk nework and digifarm.
the solution to moving the subscriptions with terrastar is to just move the gps receiver on the roof. unplug it and move it to the other vehicle.
as you have seen, digifarm charges for each vehicle moving at the same time in an operation, or by operator. terrastar charges by every gps receiver moving or not.
at the end of the day, i dont believe that any correction service can look you in the eye and tell you truthfully they are able to avoid any solar flare problems. | |
