Mine are mostly May calves that I generally wean after Christmas or into mid January depending on the weather. I look for a warm few days rather than weaning in a snowstorm. On average my calves are probably 7-1/2 to 8 months old at weaning. Occasionally I leave them together longer but aim to give the cows at least a 60 day rest period from weaning to calving. Often depends on the weather. The fewer groups I have to heat water for and put out hay for the better. Might be that Ben and my success at fenceline weaning is the summer and fall rotational grazing system which seems to gentle both cows and calves. However if you have even one or two wild ones charging fences that would probably set off the whole herd.
