Virginia | In Virginia .223 isn't legal to shoot deer. That's not saying it doesn't work, or hasn't been done. In fact I've heard it's pretty effective.
With that being said I'd want something bigger. I have a fair amount of guns, and the one I use all the time is a 270 wsm.
I really like the flat shooting aspect and the knock down power.
I shoot a 140 grain Federal premium berger hybrid hunter bullet and it is devastating on deer. The recoil of the 270 short magnum is less than a 30-06 in my opinion. Quality ammo is around $2.50 a round.
If you read up on guns/shooting there are calibers that just shoot better and more accurate. The 7mm/.270 caliber are some of the best.
I hunted for years with a 7mm magnum, but in my opinion the 270wsm is superior. I changed over about 5 years ago and I've killed a good 50 deer with it and have not had any run more than 50-100 feet from where they were shot. Majority of them fall where they stand.
