Subject: RE: Weaning

I have seen some real disasters moving cows away from the calves. A good mother will travel 20 miles or more to get back to where she last saw her calf. Most times you can get away moving calves and cows will hang around the corral you loaded calves. Once they stop balling at week or so, then move them.

Lot of dry years in the last 20 in California, to save cows have wean calves onto a truck to the auction yard as young as 5 months. With feed I like to wean at 7 months, calves in the corral cows on the other side of the pipe fence. No tricks to it heathy calves with good hay, in 10 days turn them back on grass if we have it. But the weather is warm to hot and never a drop of rain as that is a winter spring thin g here.
