| Worked part time for welding supply co while in college. There were some Truck/trailer repair places etc. that preferred carbide. They said in real heavy cutting and heating the carbide would put out more heat than cylinder gas.
Welding Co had small shack on a RR siding to store carbide, One 100deg day my job was to unload a RR car loaded with 5 hundred cans of carbide. !00 lb cans stacked 3 high; grab a can in a bear hug, walk down a plywood ramp and stack 3 high------repeat 500 times and don't smash or pinch fingers.
