North Dakota, USA | My great grandparents had acetylene lights in their house before electricity came through. They had an underground tank in the yard to make the gas and piped it into the house. The only remnant of the system that is left is the the tank, which is filled with dirt but the top ring is still visible. I never saw the cover but my great uncle said that you would put the chemical in the lid, seal it on the tank and some how trigger it to drop into the water to start the reaction and make the gas. The opening of the tank is about 18" across but I have no idea how big the tank is. He said they had to re-energize it about every 4 months, so no matter how you tried you ended up doing it once during the dead of winter which was not fun. I wish I could have seen the lid to see how that would have worked.
