Sunflowers bloom for about 2 weeks. The first few days they are the nicest. By the end of 2 weeks they get pretty ratty looking.

I agree that one big field looks nice, but it makes for a smaller picking window.

The other thing to keep in mind, and it might not matter for what you are doing, but there are special varieties for cut flowers that do not drop pollen. Normal sunflowers will drop pollen and stain any tables or tablecloth they are on.

General sunflower growing, I'd think about putting down maybe 50lb of N, especially if going into CRP/sod.
