Cover crops absolutely use moisture. Can honestly say on my non tiled fields that is my favorite thing about them.
The argument could be made though if allowed to get big enough to have lasting residue, that they could help store moisture under that layer if good June rains happen. But during winter and until and sometimes shortly after they will absolutely use moisture. Sometimes a lot.
I agree. We planted rye on some wet round that couldn't be tiled. It used up some spring moisture to help dry it out. It also provided a firm seeded to no till into, vs waiting a week + to get it close to planting and then it still be wet. |
