Doesn't a winch have more power with fewer wraps of cable on the spool? I think most electric winches are rated with only 2 wraps. You lose winching power with more wraps due to increased circumference of the spool wraps attempting to pull the cable at faster speeds....with more wraps. 

So, you had more power when there were fewer wraps on the spool. 

That's the way I understand it anyway.
