I think it lets the grain out earlier and is less likely to allow cobs to slide around round bars, they are forced to tumble. Wet corn can cause some plugging issues so if you run 20+ a lot I wouldn’t recommend. A poster below mentioned removing the pre cleaner extension. We took ours out of a 9870, made a big difference, the corn hangs up on it, by the time it falls off the back it’s in the return.
