SW TX PANHANDLE | In this arid environment, we plant rye early so that it will graze and either terminate, bake or chop it in the spring and then go back to corn. We almost can’t grow a crop here anymore without really good residue. Going more towards the grazing side and letting rye grow back some before killing it. You would think with the moisture the rye uses over winter it would hurt subsequent crops, but the added cover and root system allows moisture to infiltrate exponentially better. I might add we are irrigated, although irrigation capacity is severely diminished. Been doing this program for 15 years. | |
