If I lived any further north covers problem wouldn’t be on my radar unless still being in a 3 or more crop rotation. Getting enough growth in the fall can happen, but wouldn’t be very beneficial many seasons. This year many areas won’t see them til it rains. Now after a winter or spring wheat or oats then covers can extend further north. Many are making it work but I like to grow the longest varieties and hybrids for the region so without good rain after aerial application getting them established in a northern environment for me wouldn’t work.
Too many are doing it for the incentive and not for the maximizing of practice. I don’t take any cover crop money from the nrcs. Was utilizing covers before that came about and will continue regardless of what they are doing. They are really great about giving out the most to late adopters. If you decided to be proactive in many areas the payout is less attractive. |
