Southeast Colorado | It took us several days to get the smoldering fires put out in our grain bag messes. We finally dug a trench in the corn the entire length of the pile about 2 feet in from the ground edge. Then we just ran water in the trench from a water tank down the whole length. The problem with ours was that the fire burned up to the edge of the bag..........and then when the bag melted the corn flowed out over the edge..........igniting the corn underneath. We initially thought we had it out...........but for several days afterward it would re-ignite.
As far as getting rid of the corn...........if I hadn't had a willing grain elevator company helping...........I'd have been in trouble (They were good local folks who knew I had problems).Because Insurance wasn't covering anything. I can plan ahead and put a policy on grain and hay (which we lost several hundred tons of back then) but it sure wasn't automatically insured. | |
