Problem with crop hail ins is that a farmer may only have a couple hundred/acre or enough for land rent plus the fed crop ins. If only one of his fields get hit by fire or a portion there of and enterprise units he may not collect off fed crop and only crop hail. Happens hardly ever but when it does like that it stinks. Also you have the loss of cover for winter and thus blowing dirt. Cover crop needs applied and that’s extra and been my experience that yields aren’t as great following year or two. It’s also my understanding that crop hail (fire) is over the collection of any other ins. That’s the way it’s advertised anyway. So you bring up the liability part. How much liability ins( $$ coverage) does one need. Add a few 6200 head hog sheds plus a few houses and machine shed and equipment and new fences and soil depletion and crap 5 mill liability coverage is gone and now someone after your last penny on top of that. One reason I told my son the combine don’t run yesterday or today. And I think a tractor and disc will be following combine first round along out edges of field until we get a rain.
And it’s just about, if not completely impossible today to raise levels of liability coverage. If anybody can document they have actually been able to increase their liability coverage recently, I’d be all ears as to the company that’s taking that risk, as I’ve tried with a couple large P&C agents who are independent and represent most of the players in this marketplace, to no avail.

We can get $5m pretty easy, having some companies backing off of a few $10m umbrella policies that we have in force.
