| It depends if the dog has instinct for cows and if it likes you and listens to you. Not being around cows is not a big deal IMO if the instinct is there but typically heelers bond with the family that raised them very closely (many times just 1 person) and some may not respect a new owner that adopted one when they were 2 years old. Make sure the dog likes you at least before you take it home. If it does Id say the odds are on your side.
Also, The stumpy tail variety is said not to have as good as instinct as the normal long tailed heelers and some are tail docked at a young age so try to see if a vet can tell you if it was born stumpy or docked if the tail is short if you cant tell yourself.
