Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa | My wife's co-worker called early this Sunday morning, to tell us that her husband was killed last night in a harvest-related accident.
So no more sitting on their house front pouch, trading stories with him about our knee replacements, how our two house cats, which came from his farm, are doing, etc. I never did make it out to their place during the holiday season to see his Clark Griswold type of Christmas displays on their front lawn, which he was so famous for.
Everyone has been running full throttle the last 10-12 days harvesting around here, hot, dry, and windy. The ten day forecast predicts more of the same.
I know that it is easy for me to say now, as a retired farmer, and hard to do (been there, done that), but please consider slowing down a tad, take a break now and then, stay hydrated, etc.
Maybe even knock off a little early, go home and sit still at the kitchen table and eat a hot meal, fall asleep in the recliner, go to bed and get a good night's sleep. I bet you wake up feeling better, and probably are more productive, and a whole lot safer, the next day. Just a thought.
I am going to miss my friend. Bruce.
