Bremen, KS
That was the first one we were called to south of Odell, NE. It started on the state line road and was kept from taking a newer home to the northeast. It went through over a half mile of standing corn and beans and then jumped the north/south road straight south of Odell but was contained before it could cross the east/west road. Besides standing crop a number of bales were lost as well.

We were released to go back to Bremen and Herkimer and the chief had us go to Herkimer to refuel and refill water. We were no more done with that when another call came in for mutual aid to southeast of Oketo, KS. The Oketo dept called us and Beattie, KS because they hadn't even gotten back from the first call and were out of water. Fortunately lost was a much smaller area of bean stubble and a small corner of standing corn. Thank God a tractor with a disk was nearby and Thank God several tractors and disks and other tools showed up at the first one.

When we left the Oketo call we could plainly see the smoke plume from the one southeast of Beatrice, NE.

From the NASA fire page, the one NE of Beatrice was a big nasty one. I think all of us out on the first fire in Gage, Co, NE received an emergency alert on our phones for possible evacuation from northern Gage county.

It was a busy afternoon but as bad as it was, no structures were lost that I know of on the calls we were out on.

At one point Marysville airport was reporting 97 with 10% humidity and winds 25-33 MPH.

I think I got the grit washed out of my eyes and ears!

At the first fire I saw Odell, Diller, Barnston, Wymore, and Steele City from NE and Hanover, Logan (us) and Oketo from KS. I heard something about Marysville but didn't see any units from them. Maybe they had to cover something else. Word was there was a big one on both sides of the river at Blue Rapids, KS.

Most combines were shut down and we never started. Likely because, like us. they were out on the same fire calls.
