north central Ohio | wife grew up Lutheran and we attended there after marriage until my oldest went through one year of catechism. It was two year once a week during school year. Issue we had was the new pastor made it a pass fail course on learning the ways of the Lutheran’s. That is not at all what being a christian is about. It’s you believing in God sending his son as the ultimate sacrifice and being saved by grace. Many parents had great concern and couple older pastors approached him about his error in teachings and the church board ended up throwing the older pastors out of the church. Passinf the catechism test he gave did not dictate ones salvation. I think first communion and catechism do more harm then good as people feel secure in going to heaven because they do these vs what they need to believe. You cannot be saved by acts you do but by grace only. Unfortunately we left as we felt these courses did more harm then good. Point being I don’t think you need worry about how much or often but the quality of what the kids are learning should be your only concern. Make sure you teach them what the bible says and not historical ways of denominations being your focus when they have no bearing on your salvation.
